Gone are the days when triple bunk beds were literally three beds arranged vertically above one another. Not only were these huge monstrosities unattractive, they did not allow the users very much breathing space. Their overall height eliminated their use in most homes (especially after the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommended a 2 foot gap between the top bunk and the ceiling).

Today these beds are designed to optimize space without compromising on safety or style. They certainly are a far cry from their tall counterparts. Top 9 Most Important Items for Your Baby Nursery

There are so many aspects of preparing for your newborn baby. They range from choosing a doctor, to deciding on a name to shopping for wipes and diapers. Some of the tasks are more bothersome than exciting. Luckily, preparing the baby nursery is a large task but it might be the thing that heightens the anticipation more than anything else. There are many things to consider and shop for. This article provides a list of what you will need and what to look for in each of those products.

Crib: The crib can be one of the most expensive things you will need for your baby. It is also one of the better items to buy second hand. They are solid wood and generally very sturdy. They are a one-time purchase and you will never have to buy your child another bed. They look great and will last. Although solid wood can be re-finished if needed, there are crib rail covers available that protect the crib from bite marks and other scratches. They are fabric with a waterproof layer and are machine washable. They are an inexpensive way to keep the crib in good condition as well as adding a finishing touch to the crib bedding set. If you are buying second-hand, make sure that the crib is not more than 2-3 years old. Safety standards on cribs are always changing and it is a good idea to keep up with them.

Changing table: Choose a change table that is about waist height. The best choice is a change table with a drawer. It keeps everything within easy reach, prevents the parent from bending over and keeps the table looking tidy. Mattress protector: Purchase at least one waterproof mattress protector. This softens the plastic cover on the mattress making it quieter and warmer for your baby. They also make it easier to clean up messes. Ensure that the protector fits snugly and will not slip off the mattress and become a suffocation hazard.

Crib sheets: Choose crib sheets that are made to fit your crib mattress. Make sure that they are fitted sheets so they don't slip off the mattress. Have at least three crib sheets on hand in case of messes in the middle of the night.

Crib Bedding Sets: Most people decide on the crib bedding set first and then decorate accordingly. Choose a quality set that will be able to withstand the washing it requires. Most bedding sets include a crib sheet, bumper pads, a crib skirt and a comforter. It is a nice idea to choose something that will grow with the baby and leave room for flexibility. For example, decorating with teddy bears is cute for the infant stage but might not suit a one year old boy that loves trucks.

Nursery accessories: The size of your baby nursery will determine how many accessories you will be able to use. Almost every crib bedding set will have a wide range of nursery accessories including picture frames, toy boxes, kiddie-size chairs, fabric storage boxes and more. The more traditional accessories are mobiles, toy bags and valances. If you are limited with space or a budget, choose accessories that have a practical purpose as well as adding decor to the room. Some great ones are the laundry hampers, diaper stackers or the frames.

Window Coverings: Window covering are an important part of the nursery. Hopefully there will be many daytime naps so it is important that they block the sunlight. Many people choose to use blinds as well as curtains. It is very important to keep the cords for the blinds well out of reach. This can be a very serious strangulation hazard.

When parents leave the hospital with their newborn, the hospital is required to check that the car has a car seat. Parents may be aware of this rule, but not everyone realizes all the safety standards of infant crib bedding and furniture. In mid-October, over 40,000 drop-side cribs were recalled by the U.S. Product Safety Commission after receiving word of several injuries due to faulty side rail detachments. It is vital that parents continually check the U.S. Product Safety Commission's website for any recalls on products and read up on tips to ensure their child's safety.

Before purchasing an infant crib, check for peeling paint and splinters. Older cribs may have been originally painted with lead and of course you don't want your baby hurting himself on any splintered wood. The slat spacing should be no more than 2 and 3/8 inches thick which is about the width of a soda can. Most new cribs shouldn't have this problem. If the crib has posts, they should be at least 16 inches above the end panels so your baby's clothing cannot get caught on them. Also make it a habit to frequently check the crib's hardware to check for loose, missing, or broken parts.

Also make sure that the mobile is high enough from the crib so he can't grab it. If he can stand, the mobile needs to go. Babies have a lot of free time on their hands so it won't take long for him to figure out how to pull off pieces. Another safety tip is not to fill the infant crib bedding with blankets, sheets, and pillows. All those blankets can easily entangle the baby.

One of the most dangerous cribs is the drop-side crib mentioned earlier. Most manufacturers have completely eliminated making these cribs because they are so dangerous. Unfortunately, many parents still continue to use them. It's best to simply avoid this type of crib and purchase another crib or a bassinet. Cribs continue to be the leading cause of injury and death among all baby products, so always err on the side of caution. Continue to check toddler beds and toddler furniture too as your child grows to keep him safe.

10 Safety Tips You Need to Know About Baby Cribs

Your new life with your baby will be froth with sleepless night, so it's important to get the right crib and crib bedding. To make it easy on yourself, especially if you're breastfeeding, have your new baby in a bassinet by your bed. By the time your baby is rolling over you should have the crib ready and waiting for them and you can get a good night's rest. Here are some safety features your crib should have.

Your baby will spend more time in their crib than anywhere else except perhaps the playpen. That is until the reach the sitting up and crawling stage. Then watch out - they'll be up to no good. But to keep them safe in their cribs it pays to know about crib safety. So what makes a crib safe for your baby?

The slats shouldn't be more than 2-3/8 inches apart. If they're bigger than that then the chances of your baby's head going through them are pretty high. But you only have to worry if you use an antique or perhaps a second hand crib. Older cribs may not meet the safety standards of today. They could also have lead paint on them or splinter easier than cribs that are more modern. Beware of cutout designs on the rails and head and footboards. Babies like to stick their hand in everything and will get stuck in them. When choosing a crib, give it a good shake to make sure it's sturdy. If it wobbles, look for another brand or style of crib. Also, check the foam in the mattress as time goes by the edges break down and make more gaps. Always use nonflammable and hypoallergenic bumper pads. You only need bumper pads when your baby starts to move around and turn over. They are there to prevent your baby from sticking their arms through or bumping their head against the railings. Make sure the ties are on the outside of the crib. (This is a highly subjective issue and this is my opinion so research bumper pads and make your own informed decision.) For some people, it's the other way around. They use bumper pads when the baby is small and remove them when they get more active. After a time you'll need to tighten the bolts, nuts, and screws and check the railings for cracks. Your baby will be chewing on them. Don't place the crib next to windows with curtains, drapery cords or pull ropes, and not next to furniture that can help them get out of the crib. Before buying your crib, always check that it meets all safety requirements.

That's actually 11 safety tips for cribs and the most important one is number 11. Federal safety guidelines went into effect in 1973, but in 1991, it became mandatory on all cribs to meet this safety standard (16CFR part 1508) as set by The Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC).
