The 3 Steps to Creating Safe Deck Railings

Railings are the most visible element of any deck. They make an instant design statement for all to see and admire from a distance and close up. Deck railings do more than add a safety feature to a deck. They establish the style and limits of the deck space itself. Local building code standards won't affect the nearly endless number of deck design choices and construction choices to be used. Railings are not necessary on all decks but when they are, usually because of the deck's height above ground level, it is important to make a wise choice as to their design and structure.

Crib Rail

Step #1 - Deck Height:

Crib Rail

Railings are generally required for decks over 36 inches high above ground level and for any set of stairs. However, 24 inches might be a better minimum because in today's society people are more likely to sue a homeowner in the event of a fall. All it takes is one too many drinks and no railing for an accident to occur. In many cases the injured parties who launch these lawsuits are relatives or friends who just happen to be the individuals most likely to be on your deck. It's better to be safe than sorry!

Step #2 - Railing Height:

Railings are generally 36 to 42 inches above a deck's surface. They can be as low as 30 inches or as high as 48 inches depending upon the height of the deck above ground level. The rule of thumb is: The higher the deck; the higher the railing. This is all done for safety considerations. Deck railings can have wood, vinyl or aluminum balusters as well as louvers. They can be built with solid facings that can include plywood siding, plastic panels or tempered glass. However, they need to be a safe height above the level of the deck.

Step #3 - Railing Construction:

Railings are made up of vertical posts capped and joined by a cross member laid flat. The cross member may be the same width or wider than the posts. The spacing distance between the posts depends upon the cap's size and the horizontal rail's length. For example, 4x4 posts can be spaced up to 4 feet apart under a 2x4 cap while 4x4 posts can be spaced up to 6 feet apart under a 2x6 cap.

The strongest and simplest railings are those with horizontal parts secured by bolts or screws to the outside faces of the posts. For a cleaner, more streamlined railing, the horizontals would be placed between the posts. Building codes specify the maximum space between balusters, often 4 inches. Screws and bolts are always a better choice for the construction of railings.

Railings should coordinate with the architectural style of the home in some way. This can be done in terms of materials used, detailing and connections. It is important to check with local building code bylaws to clearly determine the requirements in terms of railing height, material types, lumber sizes, distances between support posts and distances between balusters.

The important things to do in the building of deck railings are to create a railing that complements your overall deck design, to comply with local building codes and to take the time to do the job as well as possible. In no time you'll have a railing system in place on your deck that will be the envy of the neighborhood.

Things You Need To Know About Crib Safety For Your Baby

Crib Safety

Crib Rail

When you have a baby there are many things you need. You need clothes, bottles, diapers, wipes, a crib, and many others. This can be overwhelming when you stop to think about everything you need for such a small person. The cost of these items may be a concern to parents. Many places sell second hand baby items, you can even go to garage sales too. Most of these things will still be in good shape and you can find some great deals.

Crib Rail

Secondhand

You can probably find anything you need for your baby except maybe diapers and wipes somewhere they sell secondhand items. One thing we advise would be to not buy your crib second hand. A baby spends a lot of time in his crib. Buying a new crib is a much better choice, they do use them until they are at least one year of age.

Safety Standards

The safety standards for cribs have changed over the years. If you get an older crib it may not meet today's safety standards. The crib rails for instance need to meet measurement requirements. If the crib rails are too far apart the infant may get his head stuck between the bars. However, if the bars are too close the infant may get his arms or legs stuck between the bars. There should also be enough space between the top of the rail and the top of the crib mattress to minimize the risk of the child climbing over the railing and falling out.

Bumpers

The purpose of the bumper in the baby crib is to prevent the baby from getting hurt on the crib rails. Bumpers are made of fabric with soft filling to protect your child. If your child rolls over and bumps his head it wont hurt as bad, it also prevents the child from getting his head stuck between the bars. Even though it is designed to protect the child, you need to make sure it is secured to the crib properly to prevent suffocation. If the bumper is too loose the child could become entangled in it and suffocate.

Blankets and Pillows

These cute bedding sets you can buy usually come with matching pillows and blankets to match the bumper and crib sheet. Although it may look cute, they also pose a risk of suffocation. The child may become entangled in the blanket and may get it wrapped around his head or other body parts and cause an injury or suffocation. With a pillow it may hurt the babies neck, or if the pillow ends up on your babies face it may also cause suffocation.

Sleepers or wearable blankets that form to your babies body are suggested to keep your child warm. These two items will keep the child warm without the risk of suffocation. You may need to check on your child throughout the night to make sure he is not getting too warm.

Just remember that when purchasing a crib it is well worth the investment to buy a new crib. With a new crib you are insured that all the parts are there, it will be assembled correctly if you follow instructions, and that it meets today's safety standards. You may also choose to buy those cute bedding sets, who could resist them. Just remember that it is a good idea to remove the pillows and blankets when the child is sleeping, and to double check to make sure the bumper is on securely to prevent injury or worse. Taking these few simple steps and precautions will make you sleep better knowing your child is safe.

Blankets, pillows can be great for decoration, but they should be removed when it comes time for baby to go to sleep. Bumpers should be fastened properly and double checked at the baby's bedtime each night. During colder nights, parents put their babies in wearable blankets that form right to the baby. There is no risk of the baby becoming entangled in the wearable blanket. Parents should check on the baby during the night to insure that he does not get overheated when wearing the very warm blankets.

With a few little steps, parents can insure safety with their baby's crib bedding. However, they need to remember to avoid using older baby cribs. Older cribs do not always meet today's safety standards. They often do not come with instructions and missing a minor detail in the instructions could be disastrous. In order to assure your baby's safety in a crib, it is very important to consider turning down the second hand offers from your friends and family and buy new. The investment will be worth the peace of mind in knowing that the baby crib you chose is safe and secure.

Ways to Prevent Accidents

I've read a great deal about childhood injuries, mostly so I could prevent our children from winding up in the emergency room. They had their share of accidents, to be honest, no parent is going to be able to find every hazard available. Kids can find ways to hurt themselves we adults would never have considered.

Crib Rail

Two of my heroes in educating parents on this topic are Dr. Martin Eichelberger and former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop. Through public service announcements and legislation, they and their team have cut the accident death rate for children by about 40%. As accidents are the leading cause of death in children fourteen and younger, that's quite an accomplishment.

Crib Rail

Many of the things on this list may seem old hat to you, but perhaps not to everyone. In this, there isn't any such thing as too much information:

1) Baby Gates: These are great for those of us with multiple story houses or locations we want to keep the kids out of. However, make sure that a) the gate itself is safe and b) the kid can't figure out how to open it. Toddlers are more adept and smarter than we think.

2) Capes: One of my favorite lines from The Incredibles is Edna saying, "No Capes." She is so right. Even using a towel tied around the neck can be deadly if it gets caught on something.

3) Cribs: Many cribs are being recalled due to the danger your child will suffocate. If the child can slide down between the rails and the mattress, it can kill. Before buying or making a crib, make sure the design will prevent that from happening.

4) Drapes: It's not so much the drapes that are the problem, it's the string used to open and close them. If the line is tied or otherwise closed at the end, it makes a choking hazard that can and has killed. Make sure, if there is more than one line, that they are not connected at the bottom.

5) Electric Outlets: There are small, plastic covers for the outlets that will keep Baby from sticking something in and getting electrocuted. They don't cost much, and are worth the time and the annoyance when you have to get one off to use the outlet.

6) Frying Pans: All pans with handles should have the handle turned away from the front. If you are deep fat frying something, put the baby gate up and cook it on the back burner. Many children have been scarred for life because of these pans.

7) Irons: Never leave an iron unattended, even if it isn't on. Irons are heavy enough to do damage even without the heat problem. Add that to the mix and it could be really bad.

8) Latches: I recommend that you child proof latch every single cupboard throughout the house. Kids can get into the darndest places. If you live in earthquake country, it has the added benefit of keeping the contents in the cabinet rather than all over the floor.

9) Medications: May I recommend, from personal experience, that you keep them under lock and key? Medicine cabinets, even if baby latched, may not be enough. We kept ours locked until both children were in grade school.

10) Mop Buckets: A child's head weighs more per square inch than the rest of his or her body, especially when they are very small. Children have drowned in two inches of water at the bottom of such a bucket.

11) Plastic: Grocery and trash bags, wrappers for toys and many other items come in plastic form. If it manages to get wrapped around a child's head, suffocation could occur. If it's small enough, it could be inhaled and have the same result.

12) Poisons: Like medications, I recommend lock and key storage. Kids can and will find even the most carefully hidden places. While they're toddlers, baby latches will work but when they get old enough to know how to operate them, that storage place is no longer a good idea.

13) Small Toys: This information comes out every Christmas. If a toy can fit into an empty toilet paper holder, your child can choke on it.

These are just a few of the things you'll need to keep in mind to keep your child safe. When we were expecting our oldest daughter, we were told to crawl around on the floor in every room and look for ways a child could get hurt. That's good advice for all of us.

Baby Cribs are More Than Just Furniture!

Purchasing a crib is a critical decision for new parents. A baby crib is the focal point of the nursery, but more importantly it must be a safe place for the baby to rest while mom and dad are not in the room. Think about it! Your infant will spend most of her time away from caregivers in the crib. So selecting the safest crib for your newborn is of utmost importance; it will become the centerpiece of a warm, inviting nursery as well as the safest place when not in mommy's arms.

Crib Rail

The first choice you'll need to make is which style baby crib you would like for the décor of your baby's nursery. There are a variety of styles of cribs available nowadays.
The first and most common is the standard crib. When selecting the standard baby crib you need to be mindful of the two types of models.

Crib Rail

Standard baby cribs either have a single drop side or a double drop side where both sides drop down. It depends on your needs and where you would like to position the baby crib in your nursery.

The standard baby crib will provide the classic baby nursery look; however it will not provide the longevity on the next option, the convertible baby crib.

Convertible cribs convert to a toddler bed from standard crib. These cribs even have the possibility to change from a toddler bed into a day or full sized bed. This long lasting feature offered by convertible cribs makes them a very attractive choice for new parents. Although they are a more costly item when new baby expenses are all ready piling up the convertible baby crib can ideally save you money in the long run.

Next in line would be canopy cribs have four posts on the corners of the bed. These posts hold up a usually metal frame on which you can place fabric canopies. Parents who buy canopy cribs want a more elegant & sophisticated design for their nursery. Round cribs are gaining popularity. Round cribs come with a canopy frame and they add a touch of class to your baby's nursery. Round Cribs usually have large double wheel casters which make the round crib easy to move when you need to move to another area.

Let's say you have guests and you want to have them sleep in peace and quiet, you can roll the baby in his/her round crib in your bedroom. Round Crib locks into place when you have found the perfect spot for it. Round baby cribs give the look and feel of a canopy yet round baby cribs add mobility for the parents.

For the traveling parents, a portable crib is an option. Portable Cribs give parents the flexibility of taking their child anywhere to get a good night sleep. The portable crib goes anywhere and everywhere you go. Bring the comforts of home when you travel - whether on vacation or just visiting Grandpa. The portable crib folds compactly to easily carry with you. Some portable cribs, convert into a comfortable crib mattress when your child outgrows the bassinet. Parents who travel often may consider the standard baby crib for home and opt for a portable crib when out and about.

Once you have decided the type of baby crib you'd like begin to shop around. For starters, research the names of reputable furniture stores and crib manufacturer.

Your shopping experience for baby cribs is one that is propelled by finding the best for baby. This isn't a time to bargain hunt. Locate a store or showroom browse around and inspect the construction of the available cribs. Any crib worth considering should be made with a sturdy construction. The frame of the baby crib must be solid and secure. If possible check to see if the crib is stable in all positions as most baby cribs on the market today convert and adjust to grow along with the child. Inquire about when and where the baby crib was manufactured. If interested, learn the type of wood from which the baby crib is constructed. Be sure to verify that the baby crib comes complete with instruction and warranty.

When your choice is finalized and the crib arrives in your home there are a variety of safety matters that need to be put in place. The first begins with assembly. Be sure to follow all instructions. Test again to ensure that the crib is sturdy and secure as it was in the furniture store where you purchased it. If you opted for a crib with movable parts be sure all sides or rails lock into place. Nothing could be worse than the thought of the baby injuring himself while holding onto ill-assembled crib rails. When placing the mattress inside the frame of the baby crib make sure they are right against all of the sides of the crib sets. You would not want your child's foot to get lodged between the crib and mattress. Over time any mattress that appears worn or ill-fitted to the crib frame should be replaced immediately.

Before long, the time will come when you can adorn your crib with the bedding. Some safety rules will apply here as well. You should always take off any jewelry, pillows or stuffed animals from the baby when you place them into the baby cribs. This will keep the baby safe from any choking or suffocation hazard. Do not place the crib sets close to windows, lamps, electrical plugs or curtains. Soft pillows, mattresses, comforters, stuffed toys and bumper pads are not be used in cribs sets. When babies play with toys in the crib they should be supervised. As your child grows it is important to reassess the safety of the baby crib.

For example, when the baby can sit up, make sure you move the mattress down to the lowest point. As your bundle of joy starts teething you may need to affix a plastic guard to the bed rail as many growing youngster develop the habit of gnawing on the crib frame. Some baby cribs are designed with non-toxic finishes. Selecting and using a baby crib for your infant is challenging task, but one that will provide safety and design to your baby's nursery.

Many older cribs, including the one that was used for you or your younger children, do not meet all current safety standards. Even if you are on a tight budget, you should not purchase an old crib at a garage sale or accept a hand-me-down that does not meet the following guidelines: Tips for Selecting Product Infants should ALWAYS sleep in a crib, which meets current Federal and ASTM standards. Child Development - 22 Months

New parents must face many new challenges associated with raising their little one. As the child grows older, parents can become frustrated. For this reason, it is important to understand how the mind of a child works at different stages.

Crib Rail

By the age of 22 months, the growing toddler is becoming more and more interested in asserting his or her independence. This is a good thing, especially as the child begins to set individual goals to achieve. These goals might include putting the pieces of a puzzle together or riding a tricycle down the street. Parents should encourage their child to set and reach such goals, as this is an important step in becoming an independent individual.

Crib Rail

When the toddler does not reach his or her goals-or when the child does not get his or her way-parents might be dealing with screaming, yelling, and other tantrums. This is also a normal part of development. What is most important is that parents remain calm and try to comfort their child, while explaining that he or she will not always get his or her way in life.

The age of 22 months might also be a good time to transition the child from a crib to a toddler bed, depending on his or her size. Many cribs are now convertible, meaning that one of the sides can be removed and then replaced with a toddler rail (usually sold separately). It is often best to move the child from a crib to a toddler bed before he or she learns how to climb out of the crib in order to avoid accidents or other unpleasantness.

There are many challenges to be tackled as the child approaches his or her second birthday, but parents who understand this transition will be better equipped to deal with these challenges.

Car Beds For Kids - Top Tips to Help You Decide Which Bed For Your Child

Car beds for kids are a perfect choice for your little racer's vivid imagination. Both boys and girls will feel like champions in their first big kids bed.

Crib Rail

When the time comes to transition your child from his crib to his own bed, most parents are quite ready. But the child might not be. The child is accustomed to sleeping in his cozy crib and the thought of sleeping in such a large bed might be daunting. Your child might be afraid of falling out since he will not longer be surrounded by guard rails as in the crib. Or, if the crib will be passed down to a younger sibling, he might not like the idea of sharing his crib. A savvy parent can help with the transition by making the new bed fun and exciting.

Crib Rail

Car beds for kids come in a variety of shapes, colors, and sizes. A popular choice is a model that looks like Lightning McQueen, who is a beloved character from the movie, "Cars" or a model that looks like the Batmobile, which is the cool car that Batman drives. Since car beds appeal not only to boys, you can find them in "boy colors" such as blue and black, to car beds for girls that come in colors such as pink and yellow. After all, girls nowadays also dream about being a champion NASCAR racer too.

For added safety, you can find bed rails that are compatible with your child's race car bed. Many manufacturers go the extra mile and customize the bed rails so that they blend seamlessly with the race car frame. The streamlined silhouette of a race car is a plus because this means no sharp edges, only rounded sides that will not hurt your child.

You child may be so excited about his new bed that he might spend many daylight hours playing and pretending in it. This is a definite fringe benefit, get a safe and sturdy bed for your child and he delights in playing with his new toy, the very same object.
